Botox Before You Say “I Do”?

Something borrowed, something botox?

According to a survey conducted by REALSELF, an online form for cosmetic treatment information and reviews, engaged couples (yes, women AND men) are increasingly opting for the non-invasive treatment of botox.

Is this something you are considering? How much should you get? When should you start? And will people be able to tell you don’t like them once it wears off?? ( I mean… ??) Well have no fear, read on, I am going to help answer some of your questions!

How much should I get? Is it painful?

I am not going to persuade you one way or another, but to be honest, I have been getting botox for about 5 years. I go every 4-5 months, it generally lasts around that. My appointments are quick and most often I return back to work. About 20 units are dispersed around my forehead and eye area and 15-18 units are injected right into my glabellar lines, famously called the “11’s”. There is little pain! I never feel anything, to be honest. My doctor has given me the best individual evaluation for the desired natural results I want. During my initial consultation he calmly walked me through every step and we talked about realistic goals and expectations. Everyone’s face and needs are different, so I encourage you to find a provider you trust and feel comfortable with. I also recommend staying away from any online deals, this is your face we are talking about!

How far in advance before my wedding/event should I try it?

If you choose to try botox out, I suggest trying it 5-6 months prior to your event. It is not permanent and will eventually wear off. But, if you are not a fan for some reason, it will be gone by the time you walk down the aisle. Botox is not a spontaneous thing (though I swear I can see results right away). Right around the 7-14 day mark you will look like you were at the Four Seasons Spa frolicking in the mud baths and steam room instead of sitting in I5 traffic trying to get your kid to school before 8am.

How does it work and is it safe?

  • 􏰀  Botox involves the injection of small amounts of botulinum toxin into certain muscles of facial expression. It blocks nerve impulses that stimulate the muscles to contract, which will ultimately lead to a smoother complexion. It’s more effective than creams or lotions.
  • 􏰀  Years of frowning and other facial expressions can overwork the muscles in your face, eventually leading to damage of the overlying skin that comes in the form of wrinkles. Botox injections relax facial muscles and can almost magically smooth out the skin that covers them.
  • 􏰀  Botox injections can help prevent wrinkles from developing in the future. They accomplish this by promoting the production of elastin and collagen, two proteins that make the skin both firm and flexible.
  • 􏰀  It’s fast! And safe! You can go on your lunch break and be back to work without anyone ever noticing the procedure. You will only be asked not to lie down for about an hour and not to workout at any point for the rest of the day.

Final thoughts…

When it all comes down to it, getting botox, just like your cake flavor, is a personal choice. Will it make you happier? Maybe. Will it make you look more awake? Probably. But, it won’t change the reason your partner chose to marry YOU.
